Newborn Checklist: Everything You’ll Need Before You Bring Your Baby Home

Approximately four million newborns in the United States are brought home each year. An exciting and often stressful time for many first-time parents, it can be difficult to fully know what to expect and how to prepare for baby's arrival.

It'll make life easier to have everything you need before the labor process begins and your baby begins their journey into the world.

If you're trying to prepare for your baby's arrival, it's essential to cover all the bases. Please keep reading for a newborn checklist with everything you'll need before bringing your little one home.

Feeding

Whether you're hoping to breast or bottle-feed, there are several items you may need to make life easier.

Most nursing mother's like to have these items:

  • Bibs
  • Burp Cloths
  • Breast pump
  • Breast milk storage containers
  • Bottles
  • Nursing bras
  • Nursing pillow
  • Disposable or washable breast pads
  • Lanolin or other lotion for sore nipples

If you cannot breastfeed or are choosing to formula feed your baby, you'll need to have formula, a bottle and nipple cleaning brush, and plenty of extra bottles on hand.

Diapering

It's estimated that new parents go through up to 3,000 disposable diapers in their baby's first year.

If you're choosing to use disposable diapers, you'll need the following items:

  • One or two boxes of newborn size diapers
  • Changing pad/changing table
  • Diaper cream
  • Disposable wipes or a few dozen washcloths

If you're skipping disposable and choosing to use cloth diapers instead, you'll need four dozen cloth diaper inserts and at least eight waterproof covers. Also, look for reusable brands that offer adjustable diapers so you won't need to replace them as your baby grows.

Clothing

Depending on how much laundry you want to do, it's a good idea to have various outfits ready for when your newborn arrives.

Stay prepared by purchasing the following items:

  • 8-10 onesies (mix of long and short-sleeve)
  • Five long-sleeved pajamas
  • Five pairs of pants
  • Four swaddles or sleepsacks
  • Two newborn sized hats
  • Five pairs of socks
  • 2-3 sweaters or jackets
  • Snowsuit for wintertime
  • Three large cotton blankets
  • Eight receiving blankets

Ask a friend or family member for hand-me-downs whenever possible. It'll save you a ton of money, and they'll probably be happy to pass the clothes along.

Bathtime

Newborn babies have very delicate skin, so it's wise to avoid bathing them every day. Instead, stick to once or twice a week until they become more mobile.

For when bathtime is in order, follow this product checklist:

  • Infant tub
  • Washcloths
  • Baby soap
  • 2 or 3 soft baby towels
  • Baby nail clippers
  • All-natural baby lotion if needed

It's best to buy all-natural and organic products whenever possible to protect your baby's skin from harmful and unnecessary chemicals and additives.

Miscellaneous Necessities

There are several other miscellaneous items you'll need to prepare for your little one's arrival. Some of the best products include:

  • Bassinette
  • Crib and three tight-fitting crib sheets
  • Waterproof mattress cover
  • Infant car seat
  • Baby thermometer
  • Baby monitor
  • Playpen/travel crib
  • Sling or baby carrier
  • Stroller
  • Diaper bag
  • Sunshade for car windows
  • Pacifiers
  • Baby toys

If you're feeling overwhelmed, some companies offer free baby samples that allow you to try products and stock up on necessities you may not be able to afford.

Newborn Checklist: Stay Prepared

Following a newborn checklist can seem overwhelming for many parents-to-be. If possible, spread things out and purchase items throughout your pregnancy rather than waiting until the final weeks.

Look for hand-me-downs and purchase all-natural products when available. Ask for help when needed and remember- it takes a village!
